This calculator provides an estimate for educational and planning purposes. Actual cattle feed requirements depend on breed, age, body weight, milk production, pregnancy, health, forage quality, climate and other factors. Consult a qualified veterinarian or animal nutritionist for a proper ration.

How to Use the Cattle Feed Ratio Calculator

  1. Select your animal type — dairy cow, beef cattle, heifer, calf or other.
  2. Enter the animal's weight, in kilograms or pounds.
  3. Enter the number of animals in the herd.
  4. Enter an estimated dry matter intake percentage (a starting example is 2.5%).
  5. Enter your feed ingredients and each one's percentage of the total ratio.
  6. Check that the ingredient percentages add up to 100%.
  7. Click "Calculate" to generate the estimate.
  8. Review the estimated dry matter and ingredient quantities in the results panel.

How Does a Cattle Feed Ratio Calculator Work?

The calculator first estimates the total dry matter requirement for one animal:

Dry matter requirement = animal weight × dry matter intake % ÷ 100

It then splits that requirement across each ingredient using the ratio you set:

Ingredient quantity = total dry matter requirement × ingredient ratio % ÷ 100

If you enter a herd size greater than one, each animal's requirement is scaled up to a total herd figure:

Herd requirement = per-animal requirement × number of animals

What Is a Cattle Feed Ratio?

A cattle feed ratio describes the proportion of each ingredient — such as green fodder, dry fodder and concentrate feed — that makes up an animal's total daily feed. Expressing feed as a ratio makes it easier to keep proportions consistent even as herd size or total feed volume changes, without implying any specific health or production outcome.

Why Feed Ratio Matters

Working from a clear ratio helps with everyday planning: it gives a consistent starting point for mixing feed, makes it easier to estimate how much of each ingredient to buy or store, and reduces the chance of manual calculation errors when herd size or ingredient percentages change. It is a planning aid, not a guarantee of any particular result for milk production, weight gain or animal health.

Important Disclaimer

This calculator provides general estimates for educational and planning purposes only. It is not a substitute for professional veterinary or animal nutrition advice. Actual cattle feed requirements can vary significantly depending on animal type, breed, age, weight, production level, pregnancy, health, forage quality, climate and management conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a cattle feed ratio calculator?

A cattle feed ratio calculator is an online tool that estimates daily dry matter requirements and approximate feed mixture quantities based on animal weight, herd size and chosen feed ingredient percentages.

How does the cattle feed ratio calculator work?

It multiplies animal weight by a dry matter intake percentage to estimate the total daily dry matter needed, then splits that total across your feed ingredients according to the percentages you enter.

What is dry matter intake?

Dry matter intake is the amount of feed an animal consumes each day, measured after moisture is removed, usually expressed as a percentage of the animal's body weight.

How much feed does cattle need per day?

Daily feed needs vary widely by animal type, weight, age, production level and forage quality, so this calculator only gives a general estimate rather than an exact figure.

Can I use this calculator for dairy cows?

Yes. Select Dairy Cow as the animal type and enter your own weight and dry matter intake percentage to get an estimate.

Can I use this calculator for beef cattle?

Yes. Beef Cattle is available as an animal type option alongside heifers, calves and other categories.

Can I calculate feed for multiple animals?

Yes. Enter the number of animals in your herd and the calculator scales the per-animal estimate up to a total herd requirement.

Can I change the feed ingredients?

Yes. You can rename ingredients, adjust their percentages, add new ingredients, or remove ones you don't need.

Why must the feed ratio total 100%?

The ingredient percentages represent shares of the total daily dry matter, so they need to add up to 100% for the estimated quantities to be mathematically consistent.

Are the results exact?

No. The results are estimates for planning purposes only and do not account for every factor that affects real-world cattle nutrition.

Can this calculator replace a veterinarian or nutritionist?

No. It is an educational planning tool and is not a substitute for advice from a qualified veterinarian or animal nutritionist.

Can I use pounds instead of kilograms?

Yes. Switch the weight unit to pounds and the calculator automatically converts the value to kilograms internally for the calculation.
